Pure copper isn’t magnetic. Most copper jewellery sold online is either plated (a thin copper coating over a cheaper metal like steel or brass) or mixed with enough iron or nickel to make it magnetic. That’s the quickest way to spot a fake.

The test is simple:

  1. Grab any fridge magnet
  2. Hold it against your cuff, ring or necklace
  3. If it sticks, even slightly, it isn’t pure copper
